Activa magazine is sharing an article on Vitamin C this March 6th. We leave part of that same article below.
What functions does Vitamin C have on the skin?
This powerful molecule is called ascorbic acid and is known above all for its antioxidant action, neutralizing free radicals to which cells are exposed; and ensuring their longevity. But in addition to this important function, vitamin C is also involved in several metabolic processes:
– Production of collagen, a protein that constitutes about 75% of the dermal matrix, and is the main responsible for the skin’s firmness;
– Inhibition of the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the skin tone, and which is at the origin of the appearance of spots;
– Modulation of cell signaling and gene expression, promoting skin hydration, cell multiplication and activity of these same cells, among other benefits;
– Protection against solar radiation, especially when it is associated with other molecules with antioxidant action such as vitamin E or ferulic acid.
In this way, vitamin C will have a very positive impact on the overall appearance of your skin, making it a very interesting ingredient for daily use.
Who need Vitamin C?
While this ingredient can be used by most people, there are certain skin types and concerns for which vitamin C can be especially interesting:
– Lack of luminosity, which is characterized by a dull complexion, with a grayish background; and that makes the face look more tired;
– Tendency for the appearance of blemishes, either as prevention or as a treatment. In the latter case, and if you are undergoing medical treatment, you should consult your dermatologist about the feasibility of introducing a new product;
– Daily protection against radiation and pollution, since these aggressions are the main responsible for the damage that accelerates the aging of the skin;
– Prevention of signs of age, whether they are wrinkles, loss of firmness or irregular pigmentation. As it is relatively well tolerated and has an antioxidant action, but also a stimulant on skin cells, vitamin C is one of the most used ingredients for this purpose;
– Correction of signs of age, as this ingredient is able to promote the synthesis of collagen and other components of the dermal matrix, while slowing down the cell aging process.”
